We made what we
couldn't find.

Gaurav grew up in north India and moved to Kolkata for work. He was an engineer by training, an MBA by choice, and an artist by habit — he'd always had an eye for things, but hadn't had much use for it until Kolkata. He started taking photographs. He got good at it.

There was a bookstore in his office building. He noticed it the way you notice things when you're new somewhere. Then he noticed Sonia. They worked in the same building and had no idea. It took him about a year to actually say anything to her.

He moved to New York for work. She stayed in Kolkata. For two years they sent each other photographs — his from the city, hers from home.

They got married. Moved to New York together. Spent six years travelling, working, shooting. In 2016 they moved to Toronto, bought their first home, and had their daughter — all in the same year.

Setting up that house was where Gaurav's instinct finally had a project. Their own photographs on the walls. Considered choices in every room. People who came over always noticed.

But they couldn't find cushions they actually liked. Everything was either too safe — solids, neutrals, nothing to say — or the opposite: too much going on, no logic to it. They wanted something graphic and resolved. Something that looked like a decision had been made.

So they made their own. Every design in the Buza Buza collection is drawn by Gaurav and Sonia, then made by their team of seamstresses. Twenty to start.

The name is made up. They liked the sound of it.
